The Gimp Tutorial:
Converting a sequence of image files into an animated .GIF image file
This tutorial explains the basic steps involved in converting a series of image files such as those rendered by POV into an animated .GIF file. To do so, we recommend using The Gimp, an extremely powerfful and versatile open source tool. The Gimp is the open source's answer to top-end commercial image editing programs such as PhotoShop and now features an extra set of tools oriented towards animation.
Step 16:
When saving a multilayerd image to the >GIF format, The Gimp will let the user choose between "flattening" the image by merging all the layers into one single picture or to save it as an animation. To create an animated .GIF file, select the Save as Animation option. Then click on Export.

Step 17:
A second dialog allows the user to adjust the final settings. Interlacing is generally useless, while adding comments to an image can have its use. In the Animated GIF Options we can specify if the movie will loop constantly or just once. We can also adjust the playback speed of the animation. And we can also specify (or not) the method for frame disposal.

Step 18:
Click OK and the file will be ready.
