The Gimp Tutorial:
Converting a sequence of image files into an animated .GIF image file
This tutorial explains the basic steps involved in converting a series of image files such as those rendered by POV into an animated .GIF file. To do so, we recommend using The Gimp, an extremely powerfful and versatile open source tool. The Gimp is the open source's answer to top-end commercial image editing programs such as PhotoShop� and now features an extra set of tools oriented towards animation.
Step 6:
If you get a Fileformat Warning dialog similar to the one below. Click on the Save Flattened option.

Step 7:
The sequence of files will be loaded into the Video Navigator window

Step 8:
Just to be certain that the entire sequence has been loaded, click on the Smart update button, which identifies and loads all files of a numbered sequence.
Step 9:
Now click on the Play buttom while holding down the SHIFT key of your keyboard.

Step 10:
Depending on the number of files, it might take a few seconds for the computer to complete the previous step. Once it is done, it will present 2 windows. One is the Animation Playback dialog, which allows you to play your animation.
