Recovery from Amsteldijk and Duck Shite
In a recon effort to bring the Rika back to her spot, we started her up and she was ready to go -- however, when we restarted RIKA, she sputtered out, and suffered the same symptoms as Miguel had reported -- No start, but the Starter sounded fine -- she just wasn't turning over.
Also, when we got back to the spot, there was another boat. We tied her on the outside of the visiting boat with the hope that when they leave, they tie us up -- Will keep a close eye on the rika this weekend and afterwards to see.
Next step: Call the mechanic!

Robert from poortwatersport.nl removed the starter engine to fix / replace it
Sunday, May 07, 2006
Beyond Ouderkerk aan de Amstel & back (~4 hours full speed).Items:
- Sound system works flawlessly. But I have not checked the voltage of the battery to see if the alternator can keep up generating current as fast as the amp eats it up. We only used the system with the engine on.
- Starter motor playing up in the morning.
- Half of the cruise was done with a plastic bag wrapped in the properller shaft. Motor was extremely hot to the touch, refrigerating water coming out of the exhaust was boiling - these two are clear indicators that something is wrong.
- Fueled up (including jerry can)
Music: Rolling Stones Hot Rocks (first piece of music played on the Rika ever), Janis Joplin, Jimmy Cliff ...

Family cruise with Nelleke and Ingrid

1 April, 2006
great cruise through the canals, the ij, and the amstel, picking up Marleen, Frans, Bas, and even a glimpse of Stefanie
De-winterized, and did NOT re-winterize. Filled the Gas tank, the jerry can is empty, will fill it next time around. Will also replace wing-nut for the water filter.
Need to get a stick to measure the gas level, and a nozzle for the jerry can.

Sai, Juul, Gert & Miguel in Sail Amsterdam 2005.
Prinsengracht -> Singelgracht -> Ij -> Ijhaven -> Ij -> Rijn Kanaal -> Amstel
5 hours - 2 of them fulll on.
Came back, motor was very hot (light on at the steiger). Proceeded to clean a shitload of plastic bags and small ropes from the prop (probably from the 4 outings to Sail 2005).

4 hours mostly idling or banging into other boats (Sail Amsterdam 2005).
Prior to departure, the boat was refueled, its bilge pumped, oil levels checked and, upon finding both oil levels low, added oil. As usual, checked that the nuts on the engine components of the back throttle lever were tight. They were.
Found 2 trash bags (1 open and with part of its contents strewn around probably by the weather) by the boat's dock. Very unsightly. Cleaned it up.

3 hours - 1/2 of it full-ish throttle. From steiger up Prinsengracht and down the Schinkel, stopped at Beatrixpark and then back up Prinsen and back to dock.
Managed to catch 2 plastic bags in the Schinkel - do I get a prize or what?
Beautiful day - baby ("Ella" - "Ellucha") on board - ended up fairly tired, though.

Went from "Steiger" to Ouderkerk and back with a stop at Hesp along the way. 60% flat out. Marleen, Hanneke, Frans and Bas on board.
Coming from the Amstel, the bridge at the Keizersgracht is JUST high enough for the Rika, depending on how many people on board and the water level.
Filled the Jerry Can and the tank.
Nice work on connecting the faucet to a water source!

Cruised along the Amstel direction Ouderkirk (20 minutes flat out) and then back through oost and the canal belt. (3 hours total)
Rebungied the bungy with the crappy stuff we had left -- new bungy can be purchased at Decathlon.
Found out the hard way that thin copper aint enough to support somebody on the "bed" panels
